Traffic Management
Travis Cummings knows that traffic is one of the biggest problems facing a growing Clay County. That's why he was an advocate for the new Intelligent Transit Systems (ITS) in the Town of Orange Park. Travis served on the Clay County Transportation Advisory Commission and recognizes the importance of the proposed Outer Beltway, as well as working with our regional partners in which we share borders.
Public Safety
Although public safety falls directly under the supervision of the Sheriff’s Office and Clay County Fire Rescue, such budgets fall under the County Commission. During my neighborhood precinct walks and as a 30 year resident of District 3, I often hear of concerns regarding our aging infrastructure and influx of crime in the northern part of our county. Blanding and Wells Rd are of particular concern, often the target of the crime element that spills over from Duval County. As a County Commissioner, I will work diligently to ensure that adequate resources are invested so that our communities are safe and also have very good response times when emergencies occur.
Fiscal Responsibility
A solid fiscal conservative, Cummings helped to manage the Town of Orange Park budget so that the Town had the largest tax decrease in town history. The Town is clearly “living within its means” and has been able to continue to provide the essential services that residents expect from local government.
Cummings believes that government should work more efficiently, and that elected officials should be held accountable to their constituents for how they manage their hard-earned tax dollars.
Protecting the River
The St. Johns River is in peril. A recent report listed the river as one of the top ten most endangered rivers. Cummings knows the St. Johns is the lifeblood of Northeast Florida. He supported a resolution to preserve river quality, and has worked closely with the St. Johns Riverkeeper on protecting the river.
Managed Growth
Even in the six years since Cummings joined the Orange Park Town Council, Clay County has seen remarkable growth. Travis believes that growth can be good for the county, if it is properly managed. “Clay County is people rich and property poor. We need more industry and a more diverse tax base so as to not create an unfair burden to our existing residents. The quality of life and our public school system has attracted thousands of wonderful families to Clay County. Such new households contain highly skilled and/or educated workers, which has led Clay County to have the highest per household income in the region!”, Cummings said.
Economic Development
However, the majority of our skilled workforce leaves Clay County each workday. Clay County residents have the longest commute to work in the State of Florida. Travis plans to bring better and higher paying jobs into Clay County to give more opportunities for residents to work closer to their homes. Travis was on the steering committee for the Focus on the Future Economic Development Campaign, which raised $1.5 million that will be used to market and attract good paying industry jobs to Clay County. |
